PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi revealed that Kylian Mbappe needs to sign a new contract to stay at the club. Mbappe informed PSG in a letter last month that he had no intention of extending his contract, which expires in 2024. As a result, he may depart for free the next summer, something Al-Khelaifi is keen to avoid. Later, the France striker made it clear that he had not requested permission to go to Real Madrid, the Spanish powerhouses who had previously attempted and failed to sign the World Cup champion.PSG must decide whether to let Mbappe complete the remaining 12 months of his contract or forfeit any of the €180 million (£153.8 million) they paid to sign him from Monaco in 2017.
“My stance is quite clear. I won’t say it again, but we want Kylian to stay if that’s what he wants to do. However, he must consent to a new contract,” PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said about Kylian Mbappe. “The finest player in the world shouldn’t be lost for nothing. No, we can’t. This club is French. He vowed to never depart for anything. It’s not my responsibility if he chooses to think otherwise today. It’s obvious that we don’t want to lose the best player in the world for nothing.”
After losing Lionel Messi to a free transfer, PSG will be desperate to maintain Mbappe given that he has finished as the top scorer in Ligue 1 for the past five seasons. Messi, a seven-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, decided not to extend his contract in order to join Inter Miami. After Macron declared he would work to ensure the forward remained in France’s capital, Mbappe added that the president had no say in his professional decisions throughout his career.
