Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer has signed a new contract after making a full recovery from an injury suffered during the Championship final. The 28-year-old Wales defender collapsed during the Hatters’ victory over Coventry in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final, necessitating surgery to treat his atrial fibrillation last month. Rob Edwards, the manager of Luton, called Lockyer’s new contract “a huge signing” because he was instrumental in the team’s promotion to the Premier League and was named to the Championship’s Team of the Season.
“After Wembley, his health was obviously the most important issue, and that’s where all our concerns turned right afterward. It was fantastic that we could see him rejoicing in the hospital, but it’s too bad he couldn’t be there,” Luton boss Rob Edwards said about Tom Lockyer. “However, he was back up and moving within a week or two, feeling really optimistic, and had undergone every check that was necessary, so our medical side was extremely pleased with everything. We all agree that it was a really tense time, but what matters most is that he is well and prepared to join us in the Premier League, and we couldn’t be happier about that.”
In the first leg of the Hatters’ play-off semifinal against Sunderland in May, Lockyer, who transferred from Charlton to Luton in September 2020, made his 100th Hatters appearance. He has five goals in all competitions last year, and his header in Luton’s play-off match against Sunderland’s second leg guaranteed them a spot in the Wembley championship game.
“I’m overjoyed. Here at Luton Town, I’d really like to create something exceptional,” Lockyer added. “I get along really well with the supporters, the manager, and all the lads. I enjoy being here and the club.”
