Southampton have completed the signing of Man City teenager Shea Charles for £15m.The 19-year-old midfielder, who signs a four-year contract with the Saints, follows Ryan Manning as the second newcomer at St Mary’s this summer. In a deal that might ultimately be valued up to £15 million, the first cost is £10.5 million. In addition, City has given the player buyback, bid matching, and sell-on rights. Charles has made eight appearances for Northern Ireland, and he made his Manchester City debut against Brentford in the season’s last match.
“Shea is a young player with tremendous talent, intelligence, and maturity who has the potential to improve his game with us,” Southampton boss Russell Martin said. “He enjoyed a quality education at Manchester City, rising through the ranks of a renowned Academy to the starting lineup. We’ve been watching him closely, and we’re certain that he possesses the traits we need to support our playing style.”
“There’s no reason why I can’t perform the way the manager intends, and it’s obvious that some of the players I know (from City) played very well here in the Premier League last season,” Shea Charles said after completing his move to Southampton. “The other night, Russell Martin got in touch with me and informed me that I would benefit from his possession-based approach to football, and I couldn’t be more excited. A promotion is crucial for our club, in my opinion, since we belong in the Premier League. I can’t wait for preseason to start and to play in the championship games.”
