Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was all praise for his team after their 6-1 win over Leeds. Klopp’s side had failed to score against a bottom-six club in their previous six efforts, but there was no risk of history repeating itself as they stormed away with the game at Elland Road. Trent Alexander-Arnold was used in a more central hybrid role, similar to how he was used in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal, and he provided a tremendous performance, bagging two assists.
It was Liverpool’s first win in all competitions since thrashing Manchester United 7-0 in early March, and it takes them to within six points of Tottenham in fifth place with a game in hand. A beaming Klopp was more concerned with the big picture than with where his team will end this season, hoping that this type of performance in the new formation would be the start of something great.
“I’m not sure where we’ll wind up. However, it will continue after the season. That is why we require all of the findings and performances to build on and comprehend in order to construct something new, something somewhat different,” Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said. “If we don’t win anything this season, we’ll have to rely on past successes. Instead of worrying about where we’ll wind up, I’m thinking like that. I’m not sure if we’ll be able to get close, but it’s not critical. I’d like to see us demonstrate the same level of desire, passion, and understanding that we did tonight. It is our responsibility to find that consistency.”
Klopp was particularly pleased with Liverpool’s counter-pressing of Leeds, with their first four goals all coming from scenarios in which they turned the ball over and rushed forward mercilessly, as the finest Liverpool teams have done under this management.
“It was the best game we’d played this season in many ways,” he added. “Controlling the game, we forced many errors from Leeds. Goals that are sensational. We countered the best we could [since] a long time ago. We lose the ball in the 92nd minute, and four guys chase it down. It was fantastic and precisely what we needed.”
