Manchester City striker Erling Haaland revealed that he would trade all his 51 goals for a chance to win the treble. On Wednesday, Haaland struck once again as City defeated a tenacious West Ham team to win 3-0 at the Etihad and move a point ahead of Arsenal with a match remaining in the Premier League. A rare triple is within reach for City, who will also play Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinals this month and Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley in June. The only British teams to win the league, cup, and Champions League/European Cup in the same season are Celtic and Manchester United, while Pep Guardiola led Barcelona to the feat in his first season in command.
“Although it is theoretically possible, considering that we play Leeds in three days, we must focus on the FA Cup final right now,” Manchester City forward Erling Haaland said. “You are not in excellent mental health if you do this. Like every goal I score, this one was enjoyable to score. Additionally, winning the game is very significant. They badly wounded my back when they smacked me with the guard of honor!”
Haaland said he was “really happy and proud” of his own accomplishments, but emphasized that gaining another three points in their pursuit of a third consecutive Premier League championship was the most significant part of their victory over West Ham. At the conclusion of the game, City’s staff and players provided Haaland with a guard of honor as he left the Etihad pitch. The focus now shifts to whether Haaland can surpass Dixie Dean’s all-time English record of 63 goals in a top-flight season after surpassing Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer’s single-season and Premier League goals records, respectively.
“The number of goals he has already scored is astounding,” Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola said. “The entire crew is happy with that since he is a rare and singular individual. The Guard of Honour was due to him because it was a remarkable accomplishment. He might be able to beat his own record someday.”
