Manchester City forward Erling Haaland has been named as the FWA Men’s Footballer of the Year for 2022/23. The Arsenal combo of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard were beaten out by the Norway international, who garnered 82 percent of the FWA vote. In support of Man City’s quest for a historic treble, Haaland has so far this season supplied an astonishing 51 goals across all competitions. The 22-year-old has scored 35 goals in the league after scoring once against West Ham earlier this month, giving him the league record for most goals in a single season. He has scored goals in only 47 games. As he seeks to lead City to an unprecedented treble in the final few weeks of the season, Haaland has broken a number of records.
With four games left, Pep Guardiola’s team leads the Premier League by one point above Arsenal and has a game in hand. They will play Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final next week with the score tied at 1-1 after the first leg, and if they defeat rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup final on June 3, they will have won the triple.
The FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year award was given to Chelsea striker Kerr for the second year in a row, rewarding her for another outstanding year. Teammates Lauren James of Chelsea and Rachel Daly of Aston Villa rounded out the top three. The international from Australia has 10 goals in 18 WSL games, and earlier this month, in England, she earned her 50th league goal. This season, she has made 34 club appearances and scored 26 goals.
Kerr has aided Emma Hayes’ team in winning three league championships, two FA Cups, and two League Cups since she joined Chelsea in the 2019–20 season. Due to Chelsea’s pursuit of a double this season, she has the opportunity to add to those accolades. In what has already been an exciting title chase, the Blues are presently one point behind WSL leaders Man Utd with a game remaining. Barcelona eliminated Hayes’ team in the Women’s Champions League semifinals after they lost to Arsenal in the League Cup final.
