Real Madrid have agreed on a deal with Borussia Dortmund for Jude Bellingham for £88.5m. Bellingham, who is just 19 years old, would become the most expensive British player ever if the sum for him exceeded £115 million with add-ons, according to Dortmund. Bellingham will sign a six-year contract at the Bernabeu, according to the German club, whose website collapsed when they announced the news.
“Such variable transfer costs are based on Real Madrid achieving certain sporting victories, as well as the player’s performances at Real Madrid over the course of the next six seasons,” Borussia Dortmund said in a statement after agreeing on a deal for the sale of Jude Bellingham.
Bellingham, who transferred from Championship team Birmingham to Dortmund in 2020, attracted attention from Premier League clubs Liverpool and Manchester City, but it looks like Real won the bidding war. Liverpool had been the front-runner to sign Bellingham at one point, but the price of the transaction prompted them to give up. The midfielder was honored as the Bundesliga’s Player of the Year for the most recent campaign despite Dortmund narrowly losing the championship to rival Bayern Munich on the final day. Since making his international debut in November 2020 at Wembley against the Republic of Ireland, Bellingham has 24 appearances and one goal for England.
Carlo Ancelotti, the manager of Real Madrid, spoke on where Bellingham stands as one of the top young midfielders in the world during the World Cup with England. It served as a reminder that Real Madrid is a team with a strong history in that position, despite Bellingham being one of the most sought-after midfielders in the world. Numerous talented young midfielders are at the disposal of the Spanish powerhouses. The club signed six-year contracts with Aurelien Tchouameni, 23, Eduardo Camavinga, 20, and Federico Valverde, 24, last year. Tchouameni and Camavinga joined for a combined £68 million from Monaco and £35 million, respectively.
