Real Madrid has confirmed the release of Eden Hazard at the end of June, a year before his contract expires. The international player from Belgium moved to the club in 2019 from Chelsea in a transaction that would have cost £130 million if all bonus payments were made. Despite having a five-year original contract with Real Madrid that runs through 2024, Hazard has struggled with injuries and inconsistent play. In 76 appearances throughout his stint at Real Madrid, he scored seven goals, including 10 in all competitions during the 2022–23 season. Two La Liga championships, one Champions League, and one Copa Del Rey are just a few of the trophies the team has won.
“Eden Hazard and Real Madrid CF have come to terms on a release date for the player that is set for June 30, 2023,” the club added in a statement. “In his four seasons with our club, Hazard has won eight trophies, including two leagues, one Copa del Rey, one European Cup, one Club World Cup, and two Spanish Super Cups. Real Madrid wants to show how much it cares for Eden Hazard and to wish him the best of luck in this new phase.”
After Marco Asensio’s exit from Real Madrid was revealed earlier on Saturday, Hazard’s departure followed. A pre-contract agreement for the striker to join Paris Saint-Germain is about to be signed. The 27-year-old is about to sign a four-year deal after finalized negotiations. Asensio joined Real Madrid in 2014 and has since been on loan to Mallorca and Espanyol, two of his former teams. At the Bernabeu, he went on to win three La Liga championships, a Copa del Rey, and three Champions Leagues.
Asensio has played 50 times for Carlo Ancelotti’s team this season and might make one more appearance for the team on Sunday when they host Athletic Bilbao in the final game of the regular season. According to reports, despite Real having offered the attacker a new deal, he chose not to continue his nine-year affiliation with the team. With Lionel Messi and former Real captain Sergio Ramos having already announced their exit from the club, PSG is expected to lose some of its top talents this summer.
