Marco Tilio expressed delight as he finally joins Scottish champions Celtic. The 21-year-old Australian winger signed a five-year contract with the club last week from Melbourne City for a reported fee of about £1.5 million, a record-breaking outbound move for an Australian team. During Brendan Rodgers’ second managerial tenure, Tilio went to Glasgow and became the second player he signed after fellow Australian and Hoops manager Ange Postecoglou left for Tottenham.
“Although I have talked to the club for many years and have never spoken to Ange, they have a plan to find me. They monitored me for a few seasons, but I don’t know a lot,” Marco Tilio said after completing his move to Celtic. “My focus has been on playing football and controlling what I can on the pitch. I never gave much consideration to anything but football and just focused on doing well on the pitch. Before I signed, I met with the new manager, and I was excited to be a part of his big strategy for the club and for me. My objective has been to travel to Europe ever since I came to Melbourne City three years ago. I’ve been given this chance, and I can’t wait to start working on it.”
“My thoughts have always been on moving to Europe. Due to the size of the club, I was ecstatic when I realized everything was coming together a few weeks ago. It was an opportunity that presented itself, so I couldn’t say no,” he added. “I met with him [Rodgers] before I signed, and he told me that I’m an exciting attacker and that he enjoys playing an aggressive type of football. As a player, I like thrilling the crowd. I simply enjoy moving forward and bringing forth change. With this chance I have, I hope I can do it.”
Aaron Mooy, a fellow Australian international who won a treble with the Hoops and retired from football at the end of the season at the age of 32, and Tilio also spoke about the move, expressed his happiness to live up to the expectations at Celtic.
