Manchester City are one game from the coveted treble as only Inter Milan in the Champions League final stands in their way. With the Premier League championship and FA Cup already locked up, City is now only needing a victory in Istanbul to win the UEFA Champions League for the first time ever and complete an incredible triple. Let’s examine the route Manchester City went to the Champions League championship game.
Round of 16
First leg: RB Leipzig 1-1 Manchester City
Second leg: Manchester 7-0 RB Leipzig
In the second leg of their round of 16 match against RB Leipzig, Manchester City went full super saiyan after a tense draw away in Germany in the first leg. Their ludicrous 7-0 triumph, which the squad followed up with an 18-game winning streak, really set the tone for the rest of City’s 2022–23 season. The great Erling Haaland, who became only the third player in competition history to score five goals in a single game, also contributed a record-tying five goals to the 7-0 victory.
Quarterfinals
First leg: Manchester City 3-0 Bayern Munich
Second leg: Bayern Munich 1-1 Manchester City
In the quarterfinals, Man City faced German opponents for the fifth and sixth time this season, and they once again put up breathtaking performances. Pep Guardiola’s players ran wild at the Etihad Stadium in the first leg, which may be remembered as the “Bernardo Silva game.” Haaland and Silva both scored goals to finish the scoring after Rodri’s amazing long-range strike to start the scoring.
Semi-finals
First leg: Real Madrid 1-1 Manchester City
Second leg: Manchester City 4-0 Real Madrid
Man City was heartbreakingly eliminated by eventual champion Real Madrid in the semifinals of the 2021/22 Champions League season. Man City had the chance to extract revenge during the 2022–2023 Champions League season, and they did so successfully. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing, as Vinicius Junior’s spectacular strike gave Guardiola’s squad the lead in the first leg. The Citizens were significantly outplayed for the entirety of the second half of the match at the Santiago Bernabeu as well, but Kevin De Bruyne’s outstanding long-range goal ensured they would enter the second leg in a strong position.
