Spain head coach Luis Enrique has stepped down from his role as head coach following their shock World Cup exit. After applauding Luis Enrique for his efforts and announcing its intention to start a new project for the national team in a statement, the RFEF announced that Luis de la Fuente would succeed him as the senior team’s head coach. Spain’s championship run in Qatar’s last-16 round came to an end on Tuesday when they were defeated by Morocco on penalties. Luis Enrique, whose contract was due to expire at the end of the year, apologized for the defeat after the game.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more assistance. Being a part of this was incredibly special,” Spain head coach Luis Enrique said. “Support in every sense is what the national team needs in order for Luis de la Fuente to succeed.”
“In order to maintain the growth seen in recent years as a result of the efforts of Luis Enrique and his staff, the RFEF expresses its gratitude to Luis Enrique and each coach on his staff. The president has received a report from the RFEF’s sports administration that proposes the start of a new project for the Spanish team,” the RFEF said in a statement. “The decision was communicated to the coach by both the president, Luis Rubiales, and the sports director, Jose Francisco Molina. Since his appointment in 2018, the Asturian coach has been able to infuse the national team with new life thanks to a thorough overhaul that proved a generational shift in both the team and Spanish football. With his own distinctive mark and a distinctly defined style, Luis advanced to the semifinals of the Euro 2020 tournament and twice made it to the final four of the UEFA Nations League.”
