Gregg Berhalter has been reappointed as the head coach of the USA national team after an investigation into his history of domestic violence. After guiding the USA to the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Berhalter’s contract expired. He will now be in charge of the group for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Since Berhalter resigned, BJ Callaghan and Anthony Hudson have served as the team’s interim managers. After being reported to the USMNT in December while in command of the squad at the World Cup, Berhalter acknowledged in January that he had kicked his wife in 1992. There was “no legal impediment” to rehiring Berhalter, according to a March independent study.
The inquiry found “no evidence to suggest that Berhalter has engaged in similar misconduct at any other time” and came to the conclusion that Berhalter did not inappropriately suppress information concerning the domestic violence of his wife. The event was brought to US Soccer’s notice in December when Rosalind Berhalter’s wife’s former flatmate and teammate Danielle Reyna, the mother of USA and Borussia Dortmund striker Giovanni Reyna, was given a restricted role at the World Cup. Reyna, 20, apologized after Berhalter criticized him for “not meeting expectations” during the World Cup, and his mother replied in a statement, saying she was upset that the US head coach had not offered her son the same forgiveness he had gotten at a comparable age following the event.
“Rosalind and I got into a fight one night while drinking at a neighborhood pub, and it spilled outside. When things got violent, I kicked her in the legs,” USA head coach Gregg Berhalter said. “That kind of behavior has never been displayed again as of now. The knowledge gained from that evening more than thirty years ago served as the cornerstone of a loyal, loving, and sustaining partnership. The incident didn’t define me, but it did shape me. It was a solitary, isolated incident that happened more than three decades ago, and an 18-year-old made a horrible choice at the wrong time.”
