Lionel Messi is set to leave PSG at the end of the season with the club not planning to offer him a new contract. Messi left Barcelona in the summer of 2021 because of their financial difficulties, and he signed a two-year contract with PSG. The 35-year-old has made 71 appearances for the French team, contributing to 31 goals and 34 assists while also winning the championship in 2022. This summer, PSG is also open to hearing bids for Neymar. PSG denounced the conduct of the fans who reportedly gathered outside of Neymar’s residence on Wednesday night and yelled for him to quit the team. Outside the club’s headquarters, supporters were captured on camera calling for the resignation of the board. Later clips showed a group of fans visiting Neymar’s house and urging him to leave.
“The acts of a tiny handful of people on Wednesday are abhorrent and offensive, and Paris Saint-Germain firmly rejects them,” a club statement read. “Nothing, regardless of the differences in viewpoint, justifies such behavior. The team fully supports all of its players, employees, and anybody else who has been the subject of such despicable behavior.”
During the World Cup in Qatar, Messi’s representatives were in negotiations to extend his contract, but the situation has since changed. PSG saw the signing of Messi as a triumph both on and off the pitch, but some of the club’s supporters turned against the star when they were eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern Munich. As a result of his unauthorized personal promotional trip to Saudi Arabia earlier this week, Lionel Messi was also suspended by PSG.
