Rodrigo Bentancur has been one of the best players this season under Antonio Conte. Bentancur has only been a member of the Spurs team for nine months after arriving from Juventus for £20 million on the final day of the January transfer window. Despite this, he is already well-liked by both teammates and supporters, and it is obvious that he is at home. Bentancur, 25, and his girlfriend Melany welcomed a newborn daughter during the summer, so his life has been busy off the field.
Bentancur has started 28 out of 31 games since making his full debut in a 2-0 victory over Wolves in February, with the only three games he has missed being due to injury. It’s clear from Bentancur’s admission that he “barely slept” the night after Wednesday’s frantic 3-2 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium that he was constantly thinking about how to go better. It is also evident in his choice to travel to England with Daniel Fernandez, a family friend who has served as his personal trainer ever since he transferred from Boca Juniors to Juventus.
Rodrigo Bentancur and his development at Spurs, though, has been mostly attributed to Antonio Conte. His earlier experience in Italy, where he won three Serie A championships with Juve, has helped him flourish under a coach who values his tactical awareness and defensive acumen. Conte never relents in how hard he works Bentancur and his colleagues, constantly reminding them that “he wants to get 100 percent out of every player all the time.” Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, the other midfielder on Conte’s squad, serve as the team’s pivot. They are responsible for getting the team moving while also harassing, hounding, and harrying opponents. Prior to their match against Everton on Saturday, Spurs are third in the Premier League standings and first in their Champions League group.
