Jamie Carragher believes that Tottenham manager Antonio Conte wants to be sacked after his post-match rant following their 3-3 draw against Southampton. In an astounding outburst, after Tottenham blew a two-goal lead against bottom-placed Southampton, Conte called his players “selfish,” condemned their underachievement, and targeted the club’s ownership. Tottenham’s defeat at St Mary’s caps off a dismal March in which they were eliminated from both the FA Cup and the Champions League earlier this month, leaving them trophyless since 2008.
“Antonio Conte wishes to be fired during the international break,” Jamie Carragher said. “Spurs should simply put him off of his misery tonight. His point about the Spurs not winning for a long time is correct, but you don’t speak negatively about your own team. Even when they’re paying you a fortune! Many of his reasons are demolished by Arsenal’s improvement this season after finishing above them the previous season.”
“His situation appears to be growing untenable, and I’m not sure where he goes from here. Once they lost to Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup, I felt he was talking his way out of a job,” Jamie Redknapp said. “Tottenham has a history of removing managers before cup finals. When you start singling out players, you are almost certain to lose a dressing room. He’s mostly referring to the owner’s failure to win a trophy in the 15 years since the present chairman took over. They’ve had ten or eleven managers. Excellent managers, yet they never won anything. He believes that as long as the owners are in charge, they will never buy the players you require.”
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is under intense pressure to re-appoint Mauricio Pochettino as manager, with several players and staff pleading with him to return and revitalize the club.
“The chairman will be considering if this manager can rally this club to finish in the top four. There are two excellent managers out there. Do you return to Pochettino? Or how about Thomas Tuchel?” he added. “He’ll [Daniel Levy] stay because he usually does, but someone needs to look at who is running the club since it’s been a failure on the field. It’s spectacular off the field, but it’s not good enough on it.”
