Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is weighing up an offer made by Saudi League club Al Ettifaq. The Saudi Pro League team, now under the management of Steven Gerrard, is so eager to sign the England international that they have offered a wage more than triple that of £200,000 per week. The idea of a two-year deal with a third-year option has been floated. Al Ettifaq is prepared to provide whatever transfer money is required in order to sign Henderson, whose contract has two years remaining on it. There has been no formal or informal communication between the two teams, indicating that Liverpool’s captain has not yet made a choice.
It is believed Henderson would first ask Jurgen Klopp for clarification on his expected contribution level for the forthcoming campaign. Liverpool is still undergoing a midfield reconstruction. Romeo Lavia continues to be of great interest, and they have already recruited Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. Saudi Arabia has also sought Thiago Alcantara since the Merseysiders need to change midfielders.
Henderson is evaluating the importance of his future on-field position at Liverpool as well as the potential negative effects of going to Al Ettifaq before the summer’s European Championships. Henderson has consistently fought for human rights and is one of the most outspoken champions of the LGBTQI+ community, so there is also a moral aspect to take into account. Henderson signed with Liverpool 12 years ago this month, and in 2022–23, he made 43 appearances for the team.
“Although Liverpool has not yet received any proposals or contacts, I believe that negotiations between the two teams would start right away if Henderson approves of this prospective transfer. So it appears that something is developing right now. Given that the Euros are quickly approaching and that Henderson has two years left on his contract, the England aspect is of course crucial,” David Ornstein said after interest from Al Ettifaq for Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson. “His intense preparation for the next season has been evident on his social media accounts. In a normal situation, I’m sure he would be eager to lead Liverpool ahead as the captain, but we all know how much is changing at Anfield, particularly in the middle.”
