In Manchester City’s Champions League final loss to Chelsea, Kevin De Bruyne sustained a shattered nose and eye socket. It’s unclear whether the Belgian midfielder’s injury will keep him out of Euro 2020.
The 29-year-old was injured as he was stopped off by Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger with Thomas Tuchel’s side leading 1-0. When De Bruyne didn’t get to his feet right away and appeared to be in pain, both teams and fans were alarmed. City’s medical crew rushed in, and Kyle Walker remained kneeling at his wounded teammate’s side as he was being treated.
Thankfully, the Belgian international rose to his feet, but he was in tears when he realized his night – and potentially his summer – was finished. He began icing the injuries but was sent to the hospital before the game was overdue to extreme swelling on his face.
On Twitter this morning, De Bruyne revealed the severity of the injury. He said, “My diagnosis is Acute nasal bone fracture and left orbital fracture. I’m doing ok now. We’re still disappointed in yesterday, but we’ll be back.”

De Bruyne’s participation in the Euros, which begin in less than two weeks, is now in doubt.
On June 12, Belgium will play Russia in their opening match of the tournament.
The skilled midfielder should be able to work out and stay in shape as long as he wears a mask to protect his facial injuries.
Footballers frequently wear protective masks, and much will depend on the severity of De Bruyne’s injuries. Because Belgium is projected to go far in the competition. Manager Roberto Martinez may decide to keep the player in his 26-man roster.
The Spaniard has until Tuesday to decide whether or not to keep the City star on the pitch.
