Jamie Carragher labeled Tottenham a disgrace after their 6-1 mauling at the hands of Newcastle United. After only two minutes, Jacob Murphy scored the game’s first goal, and then Joelinton (8), Murphy scored again, and Alexander Isak scored twice to give St. James’ Park an astounding final score. In the history of the Premier League, it took a team just 21 minutes to go up 5-0, which was the second-fastest margin of victory (after Man City’s 18-minute margin over Watford in September 2019).
“Newcastle has been outstanding all season. Tottenham are an embarrassment! Ivan Perisic is a winger, so how have they switched to a back four for the first time this year? Pedro Porro is a full-back who cannot defend. Immediately choose a qualified manager, not Conte’s pal,” Jamie Carragher said about Tottenham.
“I can’t believe it. I predicted Newcastle would win the game, but it’s amazing to be 5-0 up after just 21 minutes. When Antonio Conte made his outburst, much was said about him, but this is why he did it. All of what he said was accurate,” Kieron Dyer said. “Spurs are so awful that they lost the manager his job. The midfield, fullbacks, and center halves have all performed poorly; (Oliver) Skipp is the only one who has made a genuine effort. Spurs have disappointed the supporters and everyone connected to the team, and it took Stellini 30 minutes to switch to a five-at-the-back defense. By then, everything was over.”
Spurs finally fell to Newcastle 6-1 and dropped six points out of the Champions League spots despite having played one more game. Their season has been in jeopardy as a result of the humiliating loss, which came only one week after their dramatic home loss to Bournemouth. Hugo Lloris, the captain of Spurs, who was substituted at halftime, apologized to the team’s supporters and called the loss “very embarrassing” after the game.
“We weren’t ready to compete in a crucial game. Despite having a strong roster, nobody displayed their talent today,” Cristian Stellini said after the game. “Today’s system was up to me to select, and we chose to go a different route because there were so many injuries. It is my duty to make this kind of decision, which I did, but it was incorrect.”
