Gary Neville severely criticized Tottenham after their defeats to Newcastle and Liverpool in their last two games. Last Sunday Spurs were 3-0 down inside nine minutes at Newcastle. On Sunday, they lost to Liverpool 3-0 after just 15 minutes. They staged a similar comeback at Anfield, reaching 3-3 in injury time before Lucas Moura gave Diogo Jota the opportunity to win it 4-3 for Liverpool. They had rallied in the second half against Manchester United in midweek to draw 2-2. At the end of that chaotic first half, Neville had broken down the Spurs’ issues on and off the pitch, and he declared that the points still held true despite the comeback.
“It doesn’t make up for that first hour at 3:03. You can congratulate someone for returning while simultaneously stating that they are a chaotic mess and that shouldn’t be happening. Three times in a week it has occurred: five down against Newcastle, two down against Manchester United, and three down against Liverpool. You’re failing to learn. It may occur once, but not more than three times per week,” Gary Neville said about Tottenham. “Though it shouldn’t come as a surprise given how well they played, Liverpool got off to a fast start at Anfield. They have presumably been doing it for all of their existence. And the Spurs were in no way prepared for it. Spurs made a complete mess of it. For the first thirty minutes, I attacked them on everything from ownership to manager selection to job performance to the players on the pitch. When conditions are that awful, they all accept responsibility.”
Neville thinks that the club’s recent run of results and performances may also have an effect on their prospects of appointing their top managerial targets, forcing them to cling onto Harry Kane in an effort to continue to be attractive to potential head coaches. Neville, though, asserted that in addition to Levy’s errors and the problems with Conte and interim managers, the players also have some of the responsibility.
