Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola believes that Vincent Kompany will return to the Etihad as Man City manager one day. Kompany was a City player for 11 years, including eight as captain, during which time he led the team to four Premier League titles and scored one of the club’s all-time iconic goals to beat Leicester and all but seal the 2018/19 trophy. Currently, manager of their FA Cup quarter-final opponents Burnley, he has continued his success off the field, with his team just five games away from a return to the Premier League under his guidance.
“Maybe he doesn’t agree with me, but after seeing his teams, I’m confident he’ll return today. When? I don’t remember saying this portion when I expressed my feelings weeks ago. But it is inevitable,” Man City manager Pep Guardiola said about Vincent Kompany. “It’s great that he’s back, but I’ve been thinking about what they’ve done this season for the last two or three days. What I witnessed did not completely surprise me given that they are so close to being a Premier League team next year. I absolutely understand what they do now that I have a better understanding of what they do. They’ll be really difficult to beat because they perform fantastic things on the field.”
Guardiola also praised Kompany’s impact on City and his teammates throughout his time at the club, which included three years under Guardiola, during which the pair won back-to-back Premier League titles in 2018 and 2019.
“Everyone knows he was a huge figure in this town. He’s one of the club’s greatest legends. Personally, I have one regret: he was injured for much of the time I was here,” he added. “But what matters is how he has assisted me since day one. I came here from another country and didn’t know anything about the Premier League, and his impact in the locker room always helped the club make progress. He told me what he thought was best for the club. He was a great captain and a wonderful person.”
