Marcelo’s deal with Real Madrid expires in 2022. But the 33-year-old left-future back’s with the LaLiga giants is unclear due to his recent form and age.
Inter Miami, which is co-owned by former Real Madrid player David Beckham, has emerged as a possible destination for Marcelo, with ex-Los Blancos forward Gonzalo Higuain and World Cup-winning midfielder Blaise Matuidi within their ranks. Inter Miami is also said to be interested in Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, who is due to become a free agent at the end of the season.
Neville shuts down rumors about Marcelo
Neville, on the other hand, shot down rumors tying Brazilian veteran Marcelo to Inter Miami. The former Manchester United Player spoke to reports regarding the rumors.
He said, “I don’t need another left-back. You know what I mean when I say I have more left-backs than yellow taxis. We could use a few more slots, but not right now. Yes, I believe it demonstrates the club’s level of involvement. Still, in the end, I believe what I want for us is complete peace. So seeing all these celebrities associated with Inter Miami is fantastic; it means that people want to visit Inter Miami. However, in the end, I want us to have consistency here. And I want the players to stay for a long time. Consider this: any time someone in this football club is named, someone in this football club, in this team, in my team, will feel unnerved by it. That’s not good for us, and it’s not good for the player.
“What I’d mean is, because Chris Henderson and I talk about this all the time. The most competitive teams and you think about the Seattle squad, Chris Scott first and foremost, consistency is the secret,” he says.
You had the nucleus of a squad that had been around for four to five years before Sir Alex [Ferguson] revived it in the great Manchester United team that I played on. Yes, you scatter around the edges and tweak here and there and add new players around the edges, so you’re going to have eight, nine players here for the next three or four years to get some consistency, and I’m talking about the DP [designated] players as well, they need stability.”
The worse thing that might happen is that they start reading the newspaper every day to see who’s going to the club.
“I trust in the talent we have, and the owner has put a lot of investment into this football team. And now I believe that the only way we’ll be successful is if we maintain consistency. This is what the best teams in this league, and the best teams in football, have done. We’re never going to stop you guys from speculating. And, an agent throwing in players because this is a position where a lot of players want to come. But I’m satisfied with the team I’ve got, and I want consistency in this place.”
Marcelo has been a member of the Real Madrid team since 2007. He has been capturing five LaLiga championships and four Champions League titles among other accolades.
Inter Miami, in their second MLS season and first under Neville, has taken two of their first six games to sit seventh in the Eastern Conference’s 14 teams.
