Chelsea has completed the signing of Hannah Hampton after her contract with Aston Villa expired. Hampton’s two-year relationship with Villa came to an end this summer when her contract expired. During that time, the 22-year-old made 43 appearances for the team across all competitions. In Emma Hayes’ championship-winning team, she now stands alongside goalkeepers Zecira Musovic, Ann-Katrin Berger, and Emily Orman.
“I’m very thrilled! Being a part of this enormous club and being permitted to don the club’s insignia is an honor. I want to keep getting better, do my part to help the squad, and win some trophies with the team at the same time,” Hannah Hampton said after completing her move to Chelsea.
Hampton is one of the 23 players selected by England for the Women’s World Cup, which begins this month in Australia and New Zealand and to which the Lionesses will travel on Wednesday. The goalkeeper’s transition to Chelsea brings to an end a year of highs and lows. The goalkeeper was benched in Sarina Wiegman’s first England team following the Euros in September because of “personal issues.” The next three international squads did not include her.
“Hannah is without a doubt one of the world’s top young goalkeepers. Her performances have become better every year, and we have big plans for her,” Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said.
Hampton was briefly removed from her club squad at Aston Villa around the same period, however, Carla Ward did not go into further detail. She also had surgery in November for a muscular problem during this period. However, since the beginning of 2023, Hampton has managed to reintegrate herself into the Aston Villa team. In April, Hampton was called up to the England team, and her form is perhaps better than ever.
“I’m thrilled. She has put several personal measures in place since the new year that have benefited her, and I believe she has grown significantly over the past few months. Long may it continue. She’s absolutely soaring and playing some of her finest football ever,” Ward added.
