New Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has promised success during his first season. Following the purchase by the Todd Boehly-led group, Chelsea finished 12th in the Premier League last season as they spent more than £600 million on players. But the discussions with the owners and co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, have inspired the former Tottenham manager Pochettino, who avoided mentioning his previous team’s name in his first news conference.
“They introduced themselves to me, and we spoke about a variety of events, athletes’ personal issues,” Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino said. “I believe them. You are wiser than I am, and starting on July 1 I will be more involved, I remarked. I feel fine, I don’t need to seek authority, and I don’t put anything in my clause. The most crucial thing is for me to earn their trust. The biggest power you can have is trust, therefore I need to persuade them that they must have it.”
Pochettino does not want to exploit Chelsea’s worst season in the Premier League era as an excuse at the beginning of his tenure. Chelsea has already parted ways with eight first-team players this summer. Liverpool and Brighton are showing interest in Levi Colwill this summer after he impressed while on loan at Amex last year. However, Chelsea is convinced that the defender is not for sale and wants to talk to him about signing a new contract. However, Colwill wants to talk to Pochettino first before he considers considering a new contract. Colwill is now with England’s U21 team at the Euros.
“Yesterday, we spoke,” he added. “It’s challenging for me since Spain is playing England, but I hope England does well. I have discussed the next season with them. They need to join the group; we are waiting for them. I believe they will travel with us when we fly to America.”
