Atletico Madrid made their way into the last 16 of the Champions League football competition after beating Porto 3–1 (match result) in a game that saw three players get red cards, an on-field clash, and three last-minute goals. Atletico needed a win in this Group B match to qualify. Porto also had a chance to qualify but failed. It was one point ahead of Atletico and AC Milan.
Liverpool beat Milan 2–1 for their sixth consecutive win. In such a situation, the match between Porto and Atletico became important. Two players from Atletico Madrid and one from Porto had to leave the field in the second half of the Champions League match due to red cards. Antoine Griezmann gave Atletico the lead in the 56th minute. Angel Correa and Rodrigo de Paul scored after 90 minutes of play to give Atletico a 3-0 lead. Porto then got a last-minute penalty which was converted by Sergio Oliveira.
Meanwhile, two goals each from Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe helped Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) beat Club Brugge 4-1. Manchester City, however, lost 2–1 to RB Leipzig in Group A. While reaching the top of the group, PSG managed to advance as the second-placed team.
Meanwhile, Ajax beat Sporting 4-2 to register their sixth consecutive win in Group C. Ajax striker Sebastien Haller holds the record for scoring goals in all matches. Sporting managed to qualify by finishing second despite the defeat. Real Madrid beat Inter Milan 2-0 in Group D. Both these teams had already secured their place in the last 16.
