Marcus Rashford scored a brilliant solo goal to help Man Utd produce one of the most comfortable football results of the midweek action in the Carabao Cup. Following outstanding work by recalled right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Christian Eriksen’s close-range strike in the first half gave United the lead. Early in the second half, the in-form Marcus Rashford scored a fantastic solo goal that gave Erik ten Hag’s squad complete control. There were some awkward moments for the home team when Manuel Benson had the ball at his feet because Burnley, captained by former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, was competitive enough. In the United goal, Martin Dubravka likewise appeared unsteady.
Burnley had no chance of stopping United at the opposite end with Bruno Fernandes providing the creative spark. In fact, the Championship team’s steadfastness in playing out from the back caused them to create some problems for themselves. But the attacking play was everything in the opening goal. Wan-Bissaka was selected by Fernandes, and the unpopular full-back did a superb job of hooking the ball into the center, giving Eriksen a simple task to fire beyond Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
Rashford’s goal put an end to any real possibility of a comeback, but Dubravka kept Burnley engaged with a failed punch and a clumsy touch. His incisive move from the halfway line ended with a deft finish, coming off of three goals for England at the World Cup. If Darko Churlinov had defeated Dubravka in a one-on-one match, it might have made for an intriguing conclusion, but Burnley’s luck ran out. Manchester United advances to the round of eight, kicking off the post-Ronaldo era with a victory that will enhance their self-confidence.
