Robert Lewandowski continued his goal-scoring form this season as he helped Barcelona beat Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final. Barcelona dominated the game in every facet and scored by capitalizing on three errors made by Real Madrid. They took the lead in the 33rd minute when Barca’s Sergio Busquets started a move that concluded with Gavi all by himself inside the box scoring with a deft left-foot shot after Real defender Antonio Rudiger passed across his own area. Twelve minutes later, Lewandowski increased the advantage on the break when Frenkie de Jong found Gavi, who had slipped past Real’s defense. Before laying it on a plate for the Polish striker, who tapped into the back of the empty net, he dashed through the left channel.
Real Madrid, who had no shots on goal in the first half, spent most of the second half in a panicked state as they tried to avoid suffering a worse loss. But once more, Barcelona scored thanks to a costly error. In the middle of the field, substitute Dani Ceballos dropped the ball, and Gavi ran forward and crossed for Pedri to shoot point-blank into the open goal. In extra time, Karim Benzema netted a consolation goal for Real by converting the rebound after Marc-Andre ter Stegen stopped his initial attempt.
Almeria, meanwhile, held Atletico Madrid to a 1-1 tie. Angel Correa gave Atletico the lead in the 18th minute after a strong start, but El Bilal Toure of Almeria equalized with a beautiful diving header after a long cross from Lucas Robertone. After substitute Reguilon received a second yellow card for an aerial challenge in which he raised his forearm to an opponent’s face, Atletico played the final few minutes with 10 men. With only one victory in their previous six La Liga contests, Atletico is currently tied for fourth place with Villarreal and Real Betis on 28 points. They are currently 13 points behind league-leading Barcelona, who still have a game remaining.
