Mohun Bagan and FC Goa will battle out for a place in Group C of the Hero Super Cup 2023. Cup events with a group and knockout round format always feature one group in which it is difficult to anticipate which teams will win. Group C of the Hero Super Cup 2023 is shaping up to be known as the “Group of Death.” Featuring three Hero ISL sides, including the league’s in-form club Jamshedpur FC and newly crowned Hero ISL champions ATK Mohun Bagan, current Super Cup holders FC Goa and last year’s League Shield winners, and the league’s in-form squad ATK Mohun Bagan. The home side of Gokulam Kerala will add spice to the group, as they are sure to receive a lot of support from the locals.
ATK Mohun Bagan enters the Hero Super Cup after winning the Hero ISL title on penalties against Bengaluru FC in the final on March 18. Juan Ferrando’s team found form at the perfect time to propel them into the top six and then to victory in the knockout stage. So they’d like to carry that form into the Super Cup and become the first side in Indian football to win both the Hero ISL and the Hero Super Cup. The Mariners’ defense has been the team’s strength, and with players like Dimitri Petratos and Hugo Boumous up front, they have a good chance of winning this league, especially with Ferrando’s tactical knowledge.
FC Goa did not make the playoffs despite being in the top six for much of the season and playing some fine football during the Hero ISL 2022-23 season. Carlos Pena’s team showed flashes of actual quality during the season but lacked the consistency to get to the knockout stage.FC Goa may be a formidable side in the Hero Super Cup, despite a group that is still reeling from their close call in the league. Noah Sadaoui, Iker Guarrotxena, Anwar Ali, and Brandon Fernandes have true potential in their ranks, and FC Goa, one of the most consistent teams in Hero ISL history and the current Super Cup holders, would be eager to get back to their best.
