England head coach Gareth Southgate is considering leaving his role after they were eliminated by France in the World Cup. Southgate requires some time and space to be sure his decision is the best one. Southgate has always expressed a desire to return to club management, and if he were to leave England, he would seek employment with a significant Champions League team in either England or Europe. Southgate’s tenure as a manager should go at least through the 2024 European Championships in Germany, according to the FA and the England team. Last year, Southgate added two more years to his contract, which will expire after the 2024 Summer Olympics. England reached its first World Cup semifinal in Russia in 28 years in 2018 under Southgate’s guidance.
“You put a lot of strain on yourself at these things, and I need some quiet time to reflect. We’ve done it in every competition we’ve participated in, and it’s the right thing to do,” England head coach Gareth Southgate said. “In four or five months, I don’t want to think that I made the wrong choice because it’s too important for anyone to get it wrong.”
“He has done a fantastic job. I’ve seen England leave the World Cup on multiple occasions, but they’ve rarely done so with such an optimistic outlook,” Martin Tyler said. “The FA is being developed by Gareth Southgate, who has taken on the duty of making it a place where young players actually want to go and come through the pathway and can see a relatively short route into the national team, and the future is quite exciting. There is therefore a strong argument for him to stay, but because it is obviously a personal choice, I can understand why he might be considering his choices.”
