England boss Gareth Southgate believes Trent Alexander-Arnold gives the team something different as he was the star in their 4-0 win over Malta. As England cruised to a 4-0 victory, maintaining their perfect start to Euro 2024 Qualifying and keeping them top of Group C, the Liverpool right-back scored a beautiful long-range goal and provided a great assist to set up the opening. Kieran Trippier played right back against Malta, despite the fact that Alexander-Arnold has flourished in a hybrid midfield role for Liverpool in recent months. Southgate commended his versatility and said that his standout performance demonstrated his suitability for the part, noting that he first informed him of his intentions to utilize him there in a phone call four weeks prior.
“Because he has been playing somewhat there with the ball tonight, which has aided his transition, a lot of what happens will rely on his club,” England boss Gareth Southgate said about Trent Alexander-Arnold. “He’s becoming acclimated to receiving in confined spaces with his back to the goal and players behind him, which is encouraging tonight because he’s more accustomed to playing on the touchline with the play in front of him. He felt completely at ease carrying things out.”
“I don’t have any queries. He is capable. He needs to master some of the intricacies of the job, particularly without the ball, but he’s eager to take on the challenge. If you like, he has liked the project. He seemed thrilled when we discussed it on the phone a little over four weeks ago. He demonstrated precisely what we anticipated him to be able to do, and he offers us something unique in comparison to our other midfielders,” he added.
Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace earned his senior debut in England’s victory against Malta, making a promising cameo as a substitute in the second half. James Maddison of Leicester was also given a start by Southgate; it was just his third time playing for England, and he put up another encouraging display. There was admiration for England’s collective efforts as well, as they defeated their inferior opponents with professionalism and maturity.
