Despite the dire situation in their country, Ukraine and their fans showcased their unity during their game against England in Euro 2024 qualifying. England won the game before halftime, but Ukraine showed plenty of pride to effectively tie the game in the second half. All those in yellow and blue were filled with pride throughout since this was about much more than football. The FA provided complimentary tickets to the game at Wembley Stadium for a thousand Ukrainians and the families who have accepted them into their homes since fleeing their war-torn homeland. In an 85,000-person crowd, 4,200 Ukraine fans could not stop yelling for their team and the badge.
Following Harry Kane’s recognition as England’s all-time record goalscorer, there was a poignant moment on the ground prior to kick-off when the two teams got together to pose with a Ukraine flag imprinted with “Peace.” A synchronized thunderclap from the players in front of their supporters at the finale reflected the togetherness, power, and spirit of a nation in the face of rising adversity.
“I’m overjoyed that the fans recognize the players’ efforts. England was superior and had more talent, but I admired the team’s approach, and we left with our pride intact. Ukraine put up a good fight today,” former Ukraine captain Andriy Shevchenko said.
This was not because England did not want to embarrass their opponents, but because Ukraine made life difficult in the second period, reminding observers of their superiority. There is still plenty of football to be played in this qualifying campaign, and they will believe that on this evidence, they can challenge Italy for second place in the group. Ukraine returns to action on June 16 at North Macedonia for a Euro 2024 qualifier, kick-off at 7.45 p.m., before hosting Malta on June 19, kick-off at 7.45 p.m.
