Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was impressed by the performance of Facundo Pellistiri against Charlton in the Carabao Cup. Pellistri, 21, was acquired from Uruguayan club Penarol by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2020, but he had to wait until Tuesday night’s 3-0 Carabao Cup quarterfinal victory against Charlton to make his debut off the bench. Pellistri had an impact despite entering the game with six minutes remaining in regulation time by helping Marcus Rashford score the first goal to make it 2-0 and make his manager happy.
Pellistri, who has played on loan twice with Alaves since joining United, was a member of the Uruguayan World Cup team and participated in all three of their group games before they were eliminated. Pellistri was closely watched in Qatar, and Ten Hag, who called the winger’s performance on Tuesday night “lively,” observed his form upon his return to United.
“He has a bright future and is succeeding greatly, so we must determine what is best,” Erik ten Hag said about Facundo Pellistiri. “He improved against Everton [in the game played behind closed doors]. His performance, including his World Cup performance, made me very happy, and he is making great development. The following move comes as a result of his appearance and impact. I congratulate you and urge you to keep going.”
The 17-year-old Kobbie Mainoo, who made his Old Trafford debut, looked comfortable in midfield on a good night for United’s youthful players. Before Pellistri got his moment off the bench, Alejandro Garnacho terrorized the Charlton defense, maintaining the excellent form he has displayed in his breakout season.
“The performance pleased me, especially with several young players on the field,” he added. “We have seen a lot of Alejandro Garnacho over the past few weeks, but he once again displayed some excellent behavior and posed a threat.”
