Tottenham players have issued an apology to fans and are set to reimburse fans with the cost of match tickets after their 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Newcastle. At St James’ Park, Spurs suffered a humiliating loss on Sunday after falling down 5-0 in the first 21 minutes. After less than a month in charge, interim head coach Cristian Stellini was fired on Monday. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy deemed the lackluster loss “wholly unacceptable” Ryan Mason, a former midfielder, will take charge of the first team for a second time after managing the group from April 2021 to the end of Jose Mourinho’s tenure.
Prior to their matchup on Thursday night in north London, Spurs, and Manchester United are now tied for sixth in the Premier League, six points back of fourth place with two games remaining. In his post-game interview, captain Hugo Lloris had previously expressed regret to the crowd for the “embarrassing” loss at St James’ Park, admitting the team had lacked “pride.” Tuesday afternoon, the players released a joint statement acknowledging that their performance was inappropriate and making a donation to help with the cost of the fans’ tickets.
“As a team, we can relate to your annoyance and rage. It wasn’t sufficient,” the Tottenham players said in a statement announcing the reimbursement of match tickets. “Words alone often fall short in these circumstances, but trust us when we say that a loss like this hurts. We value your support, both at home and abroad, and as a result, we would want to repay supporters for the price of their match tickets purchased at St. James’ Park. We are aware that nothing about what happened on Sunday has changed, but we still want to give it our all when we play Manchester United on Thursday night. Your continued support will be greatly appreciated. We can only advance the situation by working together.”
After Sunday’s loss, the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust urged swift action to “give us all some hope and something to get behind at the end of a truly awful season.” The THST had said that fans “still deserve a refund” for Sunday’s disastrous performance after the news dismissing Stellini, who was also a member of Antonio Conte’s backroom staff.
