As Tottenham consider the future of Antonio Conte, they have a 24 percent chance of Champions League football next season according to Opta. The Spurs are likely to finish sixth this season. Prior to Newcastle’s win against Nottingham Forest, Spurs’ odds of finishing in the top four were estimated as high as 31%, prompting Jamie Carragher to warn that Manchester United was being dragged back into the top-four fight. However, following a disastrous weekend in which Spurs let a two-goal lead slip late at Southampton to draw 3-3, sparking an extraordinary outburst from manager Conte, Opta now calculates that the two teams below them in the table – Newcastle and Liverpool – both have a better chance of securing a spot at Europe’s top table this season due to their two games in hand over Spurs.
With Conte’s future unknown, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy must decide whether to release the Italian with only 10 games remaining this season. Conte predicted in his post-match outburst at Southampton that if Tottenham maintains their current mentality for the remainder of the season, they will finish lower than sixth.
“There are 10 games remaining, and some believe we can compete. What are you fighting for with this zeal, attitude, and determination? What? What about positions seven, nine, and ten? I’m not used to being put in situations like this,” Tottenham boss Antonio Conte said as their Champions League bid took another hit. “I’m terribly upset, and everyone is to blame. If Tottenham is to change, not only must the club, manager, and staff be involved, but the players must also be involved. They can remove a lot of managers if they want to keep going in this direction, but the problem will not go away. Take my word for it.”
“Conte’s relationship with the players must now be taken into account. If something is broken, it must be repaired; nevertheless, would a new manager have a significant impact on the remaining matches?” Alan Smith said. “The Spurs’ locker room and training facility could benefit from some attention. It has taken a beating; morale is extremely low, and they must figure out how to boost it.”
