Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is looking to stay at the club and fight for his place after an injury-ravaged season. The England international relocated over the Pennines from Leeds last summer, but a mix of injuries and team selections have limited his playing time. The 27-year-old Phillips started just two Premier League games as City dominated the competition and captured an unprecedented treble. He finished the year by scoring his first England goal in Old Trafford’s 7-0 thumping of North Macedonia in a Euro 2024 qualifying match, and he has no ambitions to leave City going into the summer.
“To be really honest, one of the primary causes of my severe injuries was that I was already wounded before I ever joined City. Credit to City’s medical team for their assistance in getting me back in shape as I finally participated in a couple more games for City and England,” Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips said. “My goal is to remain there. There is no need for me to quit because we recently won the treble; nevertheless, if I don’t play, I will undoubtedly have to give it some thought. I can’t declare after 12 months, “I’m not playing, so I’m leaving,” I joined Manchester City in hopes of winning championships, which we did, but I didn’t get to play as much as I would have liked.”
The duo has also required some time to get used to the way Pep Guardiola demands his City team to play, according to Phillips, who said he spoke to Nathan Ake and English teammate Jack Grealish.
“To be completely honest, I hope so. I just realize how difficult it is to comprehend Pep’s preferred style of play and how quickly you must adapt to play in his system,” he added. “I’m so close that I could nearly have it. Of course, preseason requires some preparation, but hopefully, everything will go well. It might take some time to establish yourself in the team, as you have seen with numerous City players. I’m hoping to have a good off-season and then work hard when the season starts up again.”
