Man United forward Marcus Rashford admitted that he was not in the right headspace last season. With a spirited 1-0 victory over West Ham to go up to sixth in the Premier League, Rashford’s thunderous first-half header made all the difference. It was Rashford’s ninth goal of the year, two more than he scored in a disappointing 2021/22 campaign that raised questions about his future at Old Trafford. Rashford thinks that the difficult period is now completely behind him after becoming just the 22nd player to reach 100 goals for Manchester United.
“I feel much better mentally and more motivated today because the atmosphere at the club and on the practice field is absolutely different. That’s where I was having trouble,” Man United forward Marcus Rashford said. “I occasionally struggled with more mental issues. Actually, it wasn’t my performance so much as other factors off the field. The biggest change from last season is that. I understand that it is your responsibility to talk about what occurs on the field, but as players, we need to prepare our minds for each game. Last season, I wasn’t mentally prepared for games far too frequently. I wasn’t shocked by some of the events that were taking place.”
On the day that Manchester United’s record of including a homegrown player in every matchday squad reached 85 years, academy graduate Rashford was a fitting match-winner in front of England manager Gareth Southgate. This was also the day before his 25th birthday.
