Man United will resume contract talks with David De Gea after his wedding. Although De Gea’s contract is set to expire on Friday, June 30 at midnight, United does not want to interfere with the 32-year-old’s private time with his family in Spain. In due course, it is anticipated that United and De Gea will resume their in-person conversations. De Gea, who moved to Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in 2011, has made 545 appearances since his arrival at Old Trafford. He surpassed Peter Schmeichel earlier this season to set a new club record for clean sheets. The Spaniard had a difficult season, making several notable mistakes and coming under increasing attention for his lack of possession skills, yet he still managed to earn the Premier League Golden Glove title.
Even if negotiations with David De Gea fail, Man United has a wide range of goalkeeping alternatives for the upcoming campaign with Tom Heaton’s contract extension and Dean Henderson’s return from his loan at Nottingham Forest. Andre Onana, who previously worked with United manager Erik Ten Hag at Ajax, is thought to be a target for the Red Devils. Onana plays a goal for Inter Milan.
Ten Hag recognized right away that De Gea wouldn’t fit based on his preferred style of play at Ajax. According to the possession-based methodology used by his new management, his profile didn’t fit the requirements. The 4-0 humiliation at Brentford, a ‘disaster class’ for De Gea but the outcome of not utilizing those at Ten Hag’s disposal to their full potential, was evidence of the initial teething problems. Both parties might be held accountable, and the United manager has recognized that while he works to transform United into his vision, there will inevitably be suffering. As the custodian was ordered to kick long against high-pressing opposition, lessons were learned.
United has spoken with Inter Milan about Andre Onana and has also looked at Diogo Costa of Porto and David Raya of Brentford. Ten Hag openly supported De Gea, but even if he had stayed, the Dutchman never promised he would be the No. 1 custodian the next year. United may decide to promote from within as Dean Henderson is back at the organization following the conclusion of his loan to Nottingham Forest.
