Diogo Jota scored a dramatic winner to help Liverpool produce one of the high-scoring football scores of the weekend in the Premier League. Spurs struggled to get the game going as Curtis Jones and Luis Diaz put Liverpool up 2-0 just six minutes, following 20-minute deficits of 5-0 at Newcastle last Sunday and 2-0 at Manchester United in midweek. Just under ten minutes later, Mohamed Salah made it three for Liverpool with a goal from the penalty spot after Cristian Romero fouled Cody Gakpo in the penalty area. Tottenham’s shaky start proved to be crucial given the opportunities Ryan Mason’s team would go on to produce, and Spurs eventually tied the game in stoppage time.
After Harry Kane’s goal back, Spurs saw good opportunities for Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski to go begging, as Son and Romero both hit the post in the second half. Son then made it 3-2 with less than 15 minutes remaining to set up an exciting conclusion, and Richarlison, a former Everton striker, equalized with his first Premier League goal for Spurs in the third minute of stoppage time. Jota, though, took advantage of Lucas Moura’s weak back ball right after the kickoff to score past Fraser Forster and electrify Anfield. Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, injured his hamstring while sprinting to the touchline to celebrate the goal.
Spurs lost the advantage after just three minutes, without even allowing themselves to repel one Liverpool attempt. Trent Alexander-Arnold was released by Salah at the outside of the box, and his clipped cross left Jones unmarked after he avoided Pedro Porro’s slack grip and smashed past Forster. Three minutes later, the severity of Spurs’ disastrous start was quadrupled. Again, Salah was instrumental in creating the opportunity by releasing Gakpo to the right byline, where his cross found Diaz in the box and gave Liverpool their first win since October.
Romero had given Diaz the opportunity to score on the tap-in, and it didn’t take long for the Spurs defender to bury his head in his hands once more. The Argentine badly clipped Gakpo in the box, and Salah made Forster regret his decision by missing two penalty kicks against Bournemouth and Arsenal. As some Spurs supporters left Anfield, Liverpool settled into a routine, producing at most half-chances up until the break. Spurs, however, took advantage of Liverpool’s complacency and had a clear opportunity to tie the game.
Son was let free by Kane down the left, and even though the ball went past Liverpool’s custodian Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk was there to clear it off the line as a warning. However, Spurs scored again shortly after, and Van Dijk was at fault this time. The Croatian international crossed for Kane, who could not miss as he crashed between Alisson’s knees after the Netherlands defender tripped while attempting to stop Ivan Perisic on the break. Moments later, Kulusevski capitalized on another Liverpool error to put Spurs ahead, but Alisson turned away his near-post attempt to waste a wonderful opportunity.
Despite the outcome, those opportunities caused a nervous atmosphere at Anfield at halftime. Ten minutes into the second half, Spurs twice hit the post in rapid succession, adding to the tension. Son, a South Korean striker, hit the outside of Alisson’s near post on a counterattack, and Romero’s acrobatic effort from Kane’s cross rattled against the far post moments later. After Salah’s score after 15 minutes, Liverpool attempted to finish the game, but they were unable to push Forster. Spurs scored in the meanwhile, moving one goal clear of Liverpool in 77 minutes when Son evaded Liverpool’s offside trap and finished past Alisson.
