Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo has signed a new long-term contract with the club until 2027, with the club having the option of extending by a further year. Since making his full Premier League debut in April of last year, the 21-year-old has been nearly ever-present in Brighton’s first squad. The midfielder joined Brighton from Independiente del Valle in February 2021, before spending the first part of the next season on loan with Belgian club Beerschot. Caicedo saw Brighton turn down two bids from Arsenal in January, while Chelsea was also said to be keen. Moises Caicedo expressed his desire to quit Brighton in an open letter shared on social media, but he stayed and has already made 29 Premier League games for the Seagulls.
“This is excellent news for the club, our fans, me, and, most all, Moises. It will make us stronger as we approach closer to our goals on the field,” Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi said.
After missing the midweek FA Cup triumph against Stoke, Pervis Estupinan and Solly March are available for Brighton’s visit to West Ham this weekend. Danny Welbeck is also available, while Billy Gilmour is expected to join the squad. Nevertheless, Levi Colwill is not yet ready to return, while Yasin Ayari is unable to attend due to illness.
Meanwhile, a Chelsea fan has been banned for a year for racially insulting Heung-Min Son during their August 2-2 tie. When a South Korean striker went to take a corner during a 2-2 Premier League tie on August 14, Thomas Burchell, 30, of Croydon, south London, made a racist gesture. According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), he was charged with a racially aggravated public order violation.
Burchell was fined £726 at the City of London Magistrates’ Court, with the Crown Prosecution Service claiming that the amount was enhanced to reflect the racially-aggravated nature of the act. He was also barred from attending live football games for the next three years. Burchell was identified when photographs of the event were published on social media and reported to Kick it Out, an organization dedicated to combating racism in football. When faced with the proof, Burchell admitted to making the gesture.
