Marcelo Bielsa has not ruled out shoulder surgery for Kalvin Phillips after the midfielder sustained a hamstring injury in their last Premier League match. Phillips has been suffering from a shoulder problem since the end of last season. Liam Cooper and Patrick Bamford also picked up hamstring injuries in their game against Brentford with the boss unsure about their return. The latter came on to score a last-minute equalizer after being out for nearly three months with an ankle injury.
“The time they will be out is subject to their evolution, and I can’t express myself any clearer in that sense,” Marcelo Bielsa said about Kalvin Phillips. “If the time that [Phillips] needs to recover from this [hamstring] injury exceeds the one that he needs to recover from his shoulder, then it makes sense. But as we don’t know how long he is going to take to recover from his current injury, I can’t apply that common sense.”
“I am an old man, I have a lot of experience,” he added. “When I took charge of Cagliari (in 1988), we make Serie C, Serie B, and Serie A, and at the beginning of the Serie A season we are at the bottom and all the people and the journalists were saying, ‘Cagliari is relegated, relegated, relegated. And in the end, one day before the last match, we were safe. And also when I came to Parma (in 2007), I came in the middle of February and Parma were at the bottom of Serie A and I saved the team.”
