Manchester United has completed the loan signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer until the end of the season. It is not possible to purchase Austria International. Christian Eriksen’s ankle injury, which would keep him out until at least April, together with Donny van de Beek’s season-ending absence and Scott McTominay’s brief absence, increased United’s need for a midfielder. Numerous midfielders, including free agency Isco, Saul Ninguez, Yannick Carrasco of Atletico Madrid, and Houssem Aouar of Lyon, were on offer to the club, but Sabitzer was picked. Chelsea inquired about a trade for Sabitzer as well but ultimately decided to go after Enzo Fernandez of Benfica. Sabitzer transferred from RB Leipzig to Bayern in the summer of 2021, but he has only made seven Bundesliga starts so far this year. The 28-year-old is mostly a central midfielder but has also made appearances as an attacking midfielder, winger, second striker, and defensive midfielder throughout his career.
“In life, you’ll occasionally need to make snap decisions that have a big impact. I knew as soon as I heard about this opportunity that it was a fantastic fit for me,” Marcel Sabitzer said after completing his move to Manchester United. “Being a competitive player, my season’s goals are to help the team win and achieve its goals. I think I’m at the top of my game and have a lot of experience and vigor to contribute to the squad. I can’t wait to start working with the management and my new coworkers, as well as to win over Manchester United supporters.”
“Manchester United initially showed interest in Ryan Gravenberch, a player on Marcel Sabitzer’s Bayern Munich squad who was previously on Liverpool’s midfield shortlist before joining the Bundesliga’s elite clubs,” Melissa Reddy said. “The 20-year-old, who played for Ten Hag at Ajax, has grown impatient with Bayern Munich’s restricted playing time, but the team had no intention of letting him leave this month, and the player himself wants to battle for a slot. Sabitzer is a good option as a loan player given the injury situation Christian Eriksen is in on such short notice. The Austrian international offers versatility in the areas he can cover having played out wide and in a free eight role similar to what Eriksen has played.”
