Kolo Toure has been sacked as the Wigan manager after less than two months in charge. Toure’s tenure as manager at the DW Stadium ended abruptly after just 59 days because of a run of nine games without a victory in all competitions despite only signing a three-and-a-half-year contract in late November. The Latics are four points away from safety and at the bottom of the Sky Bet Championship standings with 25 points. With the Hatters cruising to a 2-0 victory on Tuesday, Wigan lost to Luton at home for the second time in four days. With Kevin Betsy and Ashvir Johal also leaving the club, the Wigan board has announced they believe it is time to make changes.
“I want to start by thanking Kolo, Kevin, and Ash for their work while they were at the football club,” Wigan chief executive Malachy Brannigan said after the sacking of Kolo Toure. “Although it was a difficult choice, the board decided that it was necessary to offer us the best chance of staying a Championship club for the upcoming season. Unfortunately, the results on the field have not been as good as we would have hoped. We are aware that this time of year is crucial for every football club, including our own. Therefore, with the immediate goal of staying in the second division for the upcoming season, we will now work quickly and effectively to guarantee the proper individual is selected as Wigan Athletic’s next permanent manager.”
The team has declared that during this interim phase, first-team matters would be handled by the remaining coaching staff while the team moves swiftly to find and hire a new manager. During a playing career that saw him play for Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City, Toure worked with coaches like Arsene Wenger, Jurgen Klopp, and Roberto Mancini, but he had no prior managerial experience. The 41-year-old Ivorian has been employed by Leicester as a first-team coach since February 2019, but his foray into management has not gone well.
