Former Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui has rejected the approach from Wolves citing family reasons. Julen Lopetegui, who was fired by Sevilla last week, had been the top candidate to succeed Bruno Lage at Wolves, who was fired. After visiting Spain this week, Wolves executive chairman Jeff Shi had in-depth discussions with the former Real Madrid head coach. The Midlands club initially sought Lopetegui, who is represented by super agency Jorge Mendes, a personal friend of the Wolves ownership, but they will now move on to other targets.
While a replacement is sought, U18 coach Steve Davis and U21 coach James Collins are currently in command of the first team on an interim basis. Following Lage’s dismissal at the start of the month, they presided over a 3-0 loss to Chelsea in their first game. With just six points from their first nine Premier League games and three goals scored throughout that span, the Wolves are currently in the relegation zone.
The investigation into alleged racial insults aimed at a Hibernian player during their Scottish Premiership encounter on Tuesday night has already started at Dundee United. The Tannadice Park club claims to be aware of a video from the second half of United’s 1-0 victory that “looked to carry either racial or other offensive terms.” Marvin Bartley, an assistant at Livingston, tweeted his support for Hibs midfielder Jair Tavares before urging the Scottish FA and SPFL to take action.
“I kept trying to tell myself that I had misheard this, but after hearing it several times, I must admit that I was wrong. It crushes my heart to hear someone yell this and criticize someone for their skin tone,” said Martin Bartley. “We’ve reached the point where either the authorities take action or they merely inform us that they don’t care. I wish I could put into words the hurt and anguish this kind of stuff creates, but I simply cannot. Jair has my sincere sympathy; all he was trying to do was carry out his duty by obtaining the ball to quicken play.”
