Arsenal Women head coach Jonas Eidevall believes that Arsenal Women are short on numbers after failing to bring a forward in the January transfer window. As a result of Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema’s ACL injuries, Eidevall had previously stated his wish to sign a “prolific goalscorer.” Manchester United turned down the Gunners’ £500,000 record-breaking offer for forward Alessia Russo on Monday. Stina Blackstenius, who is the team’s anticipated starting striker for the remainder of the season, was one of the players Arsenal offered. United later notified the north London team, though, that they had opted not to sell Russo.
“We identified targets and I believe I made it plain in the window that we needed another forward. Though there are lots of high-caliber players available and I know the club worked extremely hard, finding clubs willing to sell great players was incredibly difficult during the transfer season,” Arsenal Women head coach Jonas Eidevall said. “Although we are disappointed that we were unsuccessful because it was really difficult, we must now go on and try to improve the situation. I still have a strong squad in which I have a lot of faith. We know that our small size may be a hindrance, but in order to achieve our objectives, we must cooperate and perform as effectively as we can.”
Arsenal, who are third in the WSL right now, did have a busy window. In addition to signing goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo and midfielders Victoria Pelova and Kathrine Kuhl, the team also called up teenage Brazilian winger Gio from her loan stint at Everton. However, Eidevall says that Arsenal is still lacking in players, most likely in the forward positions and that he will now concentrate on producing results with his side.
“I believe we acquired one player too few last summers, and we did the same thing once more in January. Therefore, it is evident that there are areas we need to focus on in order to improve, as these areas actually have a significant impact over time on our performance and the goals we should pursue. That matters a lot to us,” he added.
