Scott McTominay scored with literally the last kick of the game to help Manchester United produce one of the narrow football scores of the midweek action in the Europa League. Omonia came to Manchester having lost five of their previous seven games, including a 3-2 loss to United last Thursday. However, Neil Lennon’s team made a gallant, resolute stand, exemplified by goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, and came within seconds of departing Old Trafford with a draw.
Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Cristiano Ronaldo all had shots blocked by Uzoho, and Casemiro hit the crossbar, but in the 93rd minute, McTominay finally scored with United’s 34th attempt on goal, ending a trying evening in front of goal. United remains in second place in Europa League Group E, three points behind group leaders Real Sociedad, but with victories in their next two games, they still have a chance to advance as group champions and avoid having to play a team that has been eliminated from the Champions League.
United attempted to end any chance Omonia had of becoming the first Cypriot team to win away in England in Europe, but after a fruitless first-half assault, they were left with a familiar sensation of anguish. Rashford, United’s most attacking threat, was stopped from scoring inside the first two minutes by the heroic goalkeeper Uzoho, who repeated the feat midway through the half to tip the forward’s low shot around the post.
As dissatisfaction grew inside Old Trafford, Rashford and Bruno Fernandes both missed opportunities. When Erik ten Hag’s final substitute, McTominay, flew over in the final minute of normal time, United’s challenge appeared to have faded. Rashford would finish the game with 10 shots without scoring. To their credit, however, United was rewarded for their constant pressure when McTominay controlled the ball in the box and fired a low shot past Uzoho to break Omonia’s hearts and send Old Trafford into raptures.
