FIFA president Gianni Infantino revealed that the governing body did not propose the plans for a biennial World Cup. He said that the idea was brought up during the FIFA congress. The Confederation of African Football has given its backing although the European governing body UEFA and the South American governing body CONMEBOL have opposed the idea. The International Olympic Committee has also opposed the idea fearing it would take away attention from other sports. The biennial World Cup will include fewer international breaks during the season.
“Fifa has not proposed a biennial World Cup. The Fifa administration under the leadership of Arsene Wenger did exactly that. Fifa did not propose anything, but came to the conclusion that it is feasible, that it would have some repercussions and impact,” Gianni Infantino said. “We found it would be feasible and even positive for a big part of the world, but there is of course also big opposition to it and that is where the discussion has to start. We are looking at all options. We will take the time it takes with the utmost understanding of all positions.”
“The risk is to make football better, and I’m ready to take that gamble. What is absolutely detrimental to the players is repeated traveling and jet lag. With reducing the qualifying period, I believe that the clubs will benefit, the players would benefit,” Arsene Wenger said. “The World Cup is such a huge event that I don’t think it will diminish the prestige. You want to be the best in the world and you want to be the best in the world every year. I’m not on an ego trip. I’ve been asked to help to shape the calendar of tomorrow, I consult the whole world.”
