Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag believes the club needs to be patient with Jadon Sancho and his return to action. Sancho, a £73 million acquisition from Borussia Dortmund 18 months ago, hasn’t played for United since participating for 52 minutes in a 1-1 tie against Chelsea in October. He was also left off of England’s World Cup roster. According to Ten Hag, Sancho missed United’s two-game tour of Spain last month because he was “not in the correct status or fitness state” and was instead put on an individual fitness program in the Netherlands. This week, he returned to the club’s Carrington training facility, but for the time being, his participation has been limited to small group exercises as the 22-year-old focuses on his own individual plan.
“Although I would like Jadon to return as soon as possible, I am powerless to speed up the process. I shall exert all reasonable efforts, but some procedures are ineluctable, and this is one of them,” Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag said. “We lack front-line opportunities, players who are available and qualified to contribute not only in the Premier League but at the greatest level of football, so I too have to have patience, despite the fact that I lack it.”
“There is a relationship between the physical and the mental. I believe he’s currently making good physical progress, which will benefit him,” he added. “I hope he can come back soon, but I am unable to estimate how long it will take. He’s not physically fit enough right now, no. We must overcome some obstacles. I believe he is moving in the right direction. I don’t try to force this process since I can’t. The next stage is for him to rejoin the squad for team training, which would make me quite delighted right now.”
