Former England international Lianne Sanderson believes that ethnic minority coaches are being blocked in football. She has called upon the authorities to give them a chance. The Szymanski Report said that Black footballers represent 14 percent of the UEFA Pro License holders. 43% of footballers that play in the Premier League are black while just 1.6% of executive positions are held by Black people. She has won 50 caps for the country and has spoken about her difficulty to land a job in football.
“I think you wouldn’t see someone like myself talking about men’s football around 15 or 20 years ago. And with the platform that I have now [shows] that times are changing,” Lianne Sanderson said. “But when we’re talking about managers: Paul Ince has gone into management and Chris Hughton has gone into management but there has to be a problem somewhere as we’re being blocked somehow. There are enough Black people in the world, there are enough ethnic minorities in the world and Asian people, and there are not enough Asian footballers that get to where they need to get to. So something isn’t right, because we’re being blocked from somewhere.”
“I think a lot of it is subconscious and unbiased racism that is deep-rooted at the core and people don’t even realize it. We’re not even being given an opportunity to get a job. We’re not asking to be given the opportunity based on our skin color. But give us the opportunity to go for the job,” she added. “That’s what I think we’re seeing now and people are saying, ‘There are more people like you on TV, you’re just a token gesture.’ Well no, it’s been like this for hundreds of years where people like me haven’t been on TV, so clearly there was a problem.”
