Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey represented Ghana in the recently concluded World Cup. At Brighton and Hove Albion, things are not horrible right now, and Lamptey is once again loving his game. He originally lit up the Premier League two and a half years ago, and when an injury derailed his development, he is now prepared to shine under Roberto De Zerbi once more. Lamptey is now 22 years old, still beaming and wide-eyed, but he also has a growing body of work under his belt, as the allusion to his World Cup winter reveals. He played for Ghana for the first time against Brazil in September and then twice in Qatar.
“To be completely honest, I just tried to take it all in. You imagine yourself participating in a World Cup as a young lad. God is to be praised for the chance. You might be thinking before the games that I’m genuinely competing in a World Cup here. It was incredible. You seem really happy,” Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey said. “It was a proud time for the entire family because my parents were both born in Ghana. I got to meet my father and brother after a few of the games because they were among the spectators. I wish I had progressed further and left the group, but hopefully, that will happen in the future.”
Lamptey is undoubtedly accustomed to passing tests during training. He has the unfortunate privilege of regularly competing against Kaoru Mitoma, a flying winger for Brighton. In his native Japan, Mitoma wrote his now-famous university thesis on the technique of dribbling. The two have not yet talked about the specifics. At Brighton, players have learned to expect the unexpected, and the club has developed into a magnet for relative unknowns to become future stars. Lamptey makes an effort to keep an open mind while evaluating players, whether it’s a winger from Japan or a midfielder from Ecuador.
“Just keep moving forward, that’s all. While victory is wonderful, we must not become complacent. We do have a really strong team with a good balance of young and experienced players, which helps us make decisions. The club is a great location to be overall,” he added.
