Aberdeen has sacked manager Jim Goodwin after a 6-0 defeat to Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership. Following an ugly 1-0 Scottish Cup defeat against sixth-tier team Darvel on Monday, the Irishman was already under a lot of pressure. Following the defeat at the West of Scotland League Premier Division champions, Goodwin had been informed by the club board that they “wanted an urgent response.” However, the Dons were defeated 6-0 at Easter Road, and the club made the 41-year-resignation old known just 19 minutes after the game had ended.
“Jim Goodwin and first-team assistant manager Lee Sharp have been fired by the club with immediate effect following a string of poor results since the World Cup break,” Aberdeen said in a statement.
Since the Dons are attempting to add defenders to Pittodrie during this window, it is anticipated that a plan for the remainder of the transfer window will also be on the agenda. On Sunday, the Aberdeen board will meet to talk about the club’s future and course of action. Although an offer for Go Ahead Eagles center-back Jay Idzes was turned down, Aberdeen and his agent are still in pre-contract negotiations. Aberdeen has dropped to seventh place in the Scottish Premiership after winning just one of their past ten games overall.
After joining Pittodrie from fellow Scottish Premiership team St Mirren in February 2022 to take over for Stephen Glass, Goodwin leaves the position after less than a year in command. But following the exits of Goodwin, Glass, and Derek McInnes in 2021, Aberdeen is currently searching for its fourth manager in two years.
“I have trouble speaking for someone who rarely does. 1,700 people, all of whom were cheering on their team and singing during the contest, were present today. I’ve been a fan my entire life, and I’m startled, humiliated, and embarrassed by the outcomes,” Aberdeen owner Dave Cormack said. “Jim is a nice man who has given his all in this situation. I ran into him after the game, and he hugged me and said, ‘I know Dave, it is just not good enough.’ We, therefore, part ways for obvious reasons.”
