Madrid’s mayor said the Spanish capital is in talks to have the Champions League final this year if organizers choose to move it from Istanbul because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The greatest game in European football was set to be played at Istanbul’s Ataturk Stadium on May 30 preceding the tournament was delayed because of the infection outbreak at the last-16 level in March.
“I realize plans are being made and I want to announce the full help of the city hall for the final of this Champions League in Madrid,” said Mayor Jose Luis Martinez in Tuesday’s Marca newspaper as telling 13tv system.
There has been no formal statement about whether the re-arranged final will be held in Istanbul. A report from the New York Times last month said the show-stopper occasion won’t be held in the Turkish city, and consideration was given to alternative settings.
UEFA, who declined to remark on Almeida ‘s remarks, said a working gathering had been set up and taken a gander at “a variety of alternatives,” adding that greater clarity would be given by a gathering of the Executive Committee on 17 June.
As was the case in major European leagues like the Bundesliga, which returned last month, the final is probably going to be held without spectators.
Spain is among the nations most noticeably terrible affected by the coronavirus pandemic, with in excess of 27,000 deaths recorded. Madrid has had the most noteworthy death and disease rate in the world.
In any case, with the contamination rate dropping markedly, normal life in Spain is gradually continuing.
“We have the correct conditions for stability, we have the infrastructure and open administrations to keep it and it would make an impression on the world that after all the strife we’ve lived, Madrid isn’t surrendering and is on the ascent again,” Almeida said.
